there is no way that we'd be able to pull this farm off without the help of our friends and family. everyone has come out of the woodwork to pitch in... our friend beth who designed our logo and literature, evan who's been helping with the greenhouse work, johnny who is making sure that we'll have good equipment and land to farm, peter and marty who found us the plot of land at 488 spec pond road, jeff and becky who own 488 spec pond road, sasha (and countless others) who've been spreading the word... our families who've been kicking in support left and right... and so many others. including frank carus, builder and regional coordinator extraordinaire, who is very friendly and knowledgeable (despite what his photo below might lead you to believe). he's the kind of guy that makes good things happen where ever he happens to be. frank has been building our farmstand, helping spread the word, finding local help and all together acting as fuel for our farming fire. he donates more of himself than he should, hes a good dude and we'd be sunk without him.
if any of you are looking for a killer back country ski, climbing, ice climbing or mountaineering guide, he is the guy... he is a talented builder, fine finish carpenter, witty as a new yorker cartoon and good looking to boot... our friend frank, so good they should have made more...
Finally, after a number of setbacks, we started the season by seeding our onions, leeks and shallots. Its one of the best days of the year... lots of promise and fun, lots of anticipation, but really, not that hard of a task. A very satisfying labor to product ratio... and it was hot as hell... in a good way.
paperwork takes the fun out of farming... but orchestrating the big effort makes it all worth it. i almost fired up the greenhouse today just to get away from forms and filing... three more weeks and it all makes sense again.
the seed order is in and we finally got the plastic on the hoop house. one month from today we start the onions and leeks... seems impossible, but we're going to start this season off with almost everything in order. luck, hope, prayer.
